At BC People First Society (BCPF), we believe that everyone deserves to understand information clearly. That’s why we love plain language. Plain language is a way of writing and speaking that is simple, clear, and easy to understand.
I myself have gone to meetings where the materials were all complicated words. I have to speak up and ask for plain language versions of documents all the time. Plain Language helps so many people, it should be the standard. Especially for any important forms or meetings.
When things are in plain language, more people are able to join in.
Not everyone knows they can ask for plain language documents. And not every organization gives these even when asked. Plain Language, Braille, ASL, Large Print, and materials in other languages are all important. Accessibility matters. Inclusion matters. Everyone deserves to be included.
When I see complicated forms, it is such a big letdown.
“Applicants who meet the necessary criteria for affordable housing must provide supporting evidence to demonstrate financial need.”
This could be better like:
"To apply for affordable housing, show proof of your income."
Now, in my example, someone in urgent need of housing understands the next step they need to take.
What is Plain Language?
Plain language uses simple words, short sentences, and clear order so everyone can read it easily.
It removes hard words and confusing language so people can understand the message the first time they read it.
Why is Plain Language Important?
· It makes information accessible to people with disabilities, English language learners, and anyone who finds complicated writing hard to read.
· It saves time by helping people find what they need quickly.
· It is helpful for inclusion because everyone deserves to understand important information.
